PREFACE.

AT no time probably within recent years has
there been a more widespread desire than now
among Church people to learn to pray more and
to learn to pray better. The present seems,
therefore, an opportune time to offer some
further assistance towards cultivating this divine
faculty of man's being.

There can be no doubt that the art of prayer,
like all other arts, can best be learned by steady
practice, and no better opportunity for such
practice could be found than that offered by
Prayer Meetings, Prayer Classes, and Prayer
Conventions, which are now happily becoming so
frequent among us.

Further, now that books are cheap and every
one can read them, Prayer Manuals may be
turned to very full account on these occasions.

But there appear to exist at present no
books designed to serve this purpose. There are
an immense number of devotional manuals for
use in secret prayer ; there is also our Book of
Common Prayer for use in public worship, but a
manuel which stands midway between the two,
providing devotions suitable for united prayer
other than the public services of the Church,
seems to be wholly lacking. This Manual aims
at supplying the need.

It has a further end in view. By providing
devotions drawn largely from the Holy Scriptures
and the Book of Common Prayer, THE CHURCH
MAN'S PRAYER MANUAL seeks to train the
Christian soul in the devotional use of the Bible

IV. PREFACE.

and in a fuller knowledge and appreciation of
the prayers and other devotions provided for the
Church's liturgical worship. At the same time
the need of freshness has not been overlooked ;
familiar words have been turned into new
devotions, and familiar devotions have been cast
into new forms.

The Manual has a yet further purpose, namely
to recover, if it may be, the lost voices of the people
by putting into their lips a large share of the
devotions, and thus familiarizing them with the
sound of their own voices upraised in prayer.
It should be noted that the devotions are so
arranged that the people may take their full
part. Whenever united prayer is contemplated
the devotion is carefully punctuated by colons
to indicate the pauses necessary to secure
orderly and well-timed recitation ; and further,
to secure also an united beginning by all. the
initial words, to be first said by the Leader alone,
are printed in small capitals.

The devotions here provided must not be
regarded as relieving the Leader from the necessity
for careful preparation. On the contrary, to him
will belong the duty of selecting from a large
amount of material a series of devotions suited to
the occasion, needs and circumstances of the
particular meeting.

But it is unnecessary to go further into
detailed explanations here since full information
as to the method of using the Manual is given in
the appendix.

The compiler has drawn his material from

many and varied sources. In many cases its
origin is indicated in a footnote added to the
devotion. In other cases due acknowledgment is
made in a note at the end of the volume.

Whilea book of this character must necessarily
be limited in its contents, the devotions here
gathered will probably suggest many others
compiled in a like manner from the same sources.
Psalter, Prayer Book, and Hymn Book have still
their stores to yield, while the Gospels, Epistles,
and many of the books of the Old Testament
(not omitting the Apocrypha), if studied for the
purpose, will also reveal prayers, lections, and
acts of devotion well adapted to united use.
Thus Leaders and Prayer Bands may gradually
gather for themselves a store of devotions (to be
added to this volume or used in its stead) which
may prove of great value and profit to souls in
their progress in the life of prayer.

Second Edition.

The widespread demand for this volume has
necessitated the issue of a second edition. In
this, various type errors have been corrected,
devotion 57 iii. has been replaced by a missionary
devotion for midday, six prayers (1233, i23b,
I26a, I28a, 1333, i35a) have been added under
the head of INTERCESSIONS, and the Psalter
Table, 145, etc., has been omitted to make room
for a Litany of Thanksgiving for the Saints (i6ya).

1 FEOM THE LIPS OF JESUS CHRIST.

I say unto you, what things soever ye desire,
when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye
shall have them. Mk. xi. 24.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye
shall find ; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

For every one that asketh receiveth ; and he
that seeketh findeth ; and to him that knocketh it
shall be opened.

Or what man is there of you, whom if his son
ask bread, will he give him a stone ? Or if he ask
a fish, will he give him a serpent ?

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good
gifts unto your children, how much more shall
your Father which is in heaven give good things
to them that ask him ? Matt. vii. 7-11.

I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree
on earth as touching anything that they shall ask,
it shall be done for them of my Father which is in
heaven. For where two or three are gathered
together in my name, there am I in the midst
of them. Mutt, xviii. 19-20.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you,
ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto
you. John xv. 7.

Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I
do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will
doit. John'x.iv. 13-H.

2 INCENTIVES TO PRAYER.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye
shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it
you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name :
ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be
full. Johnxvi. 23-2-i.

2 FROM THE PSALMS.

Call upon me in the time of trouble : so will I
hear thee and thou shalt praise me. 1. 15.

Whensoever I call upon Thee then shall mine
enemies be put to flight : this I know, for God is
on my side. Ivi. 9.

I have called upon Thee God, for thou shalt
hear me : incline thine ear to me, and hearken
unto my words, xvii. 6.

Let my prayer be set forth in thy sight as the
incense : and let the lifting up of my hands be an
evening sacrifice, cxli. 2.

I will cry unto God with my voice : even unto
God will I cry with my voice, and he shall
hearken unto me. Ixxvii. 1.

In my trouble I will call upon the Lord : and
complain unto my God. xviii. 5.

In the time of my trouble I will call upon thee :
for thou hearest me. Ixxxvi. 7.

When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord :
and he heard me. cxx. 1.

So they cried unto the Lord in their trouble :
and he delivered them from their distress, cvii. 6.

Lord thou hast heard the desire of the poor:
thou preparest their heart, and thine ear
hearkeneth thereto, x. 19.

INCENTIVES TO PRAYER. 3

Lo the poor crieth, and the Lord heareth him : yea,
and saveth him out of all his troubles, xxxiv. 6.

I sought the Lord, and he heard me : yea, he
delivered me out of all my fear, xxxiv. 4.

If I incline unto wickedness with mine heart :
the Lord will not hear me. But God hath heard me :
and considered the voice of my prayer. Ixvi. 16.

Now know I that the Lord helpeth his anointed,
and will hear him from his holy heaven : even with
the wholesome strength of his right hand. xx. 6.

3 FROM THE PROPHETS.

For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel,
Seek ye me, and ye shall live. Amos v. 4. 8.

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye
upon him while he is near. Is. Iv. 6.

Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer ;
thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.
Is. Iviii. 9.

He will be very gracious unto thee at the voice
of thy cry ; when he shall hear it, he will answer
thee. Is. xxx. 19.

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I
will answer, and while they are yet speaking, I
will hear. la. Ixv. 24.

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew
thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest
not Jer. xxxiii. 3.

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and
pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And
ye shall seek me, and find me, wher ye shall search
for me with all your heart. Jer. xxix. 12, 13.

4 INCENTIVES TO PRAYER.

They shall call on ray name, and I will hear
them : I will say, it is my people : and they shall
say, The Lord is my God. Zech. xiii. 9.

4 FROM THE EPISTLES.

Pray without ceasing. 1. Thess, v. 17.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication
in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints.
Eph. vi. 18.

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your
most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.
Jude 20.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities :
for we know not what we should pray for as we
ought : but the Spirit itself maketh intercession
for us with groauings which cannot be uttered.
Horn. viii. 26.

Rejoicing in hope ; patient in tribulation ; con
tinuing instant in prayer. Rom. xii. 12.

Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with
thanksgiving. Col. iv. 2.

Be careful for nothing ; but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your
requests be made known unto God. Phil. iv. 6.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous
and his ears are open unto their prayers. 1. Pet.
iii. 12.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one
for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual
fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
James v. 16.

5 SILENCE.

Remember the value of silence as a preparation
for prayer ; a quiet time for collecting thoughts ;
for concentrating attention ; for lifting up the
soul; for preparing to enter the Audience Chamber
of the King of Kings.

Remember also the value of intervals of silence
during a time of united prayer ; for rest of body,
mind and spirit ; and for renewal of recollected-
ness.

6 RECOLLECTION.

LET us remember the presence of God : and lift
up our hearts

To God the Father : to whom we pray.
To God the Son : through whom we pray.
To God the Holy Spirit : in whom we pray.

V. Veni Creator Spiritns.

COME, HOLY GHOST, our souls inspire,
And lighten with celestial fire ;
Thou the anointing SPIRIT art.
Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart.
Thy blessed unction from above
Is comfort, life, and fire of love.

Enable with perpetual light
The dulness of our blinded sight ;
Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace.
Keep far our foes, give peace at home,
Where Thou art Guide no ill can come.

6 PREPARATION FOR PRAYER.

Teach us to know the FATHER, SON,
And THEE, of Both, to be but ONE ;
That through the ages all along
This may be our endless song,
Praise to Thy Eternal merit,
FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT.
Ordinal.

29 iv.

FROM THE BOOK OF NEHEMIAH.

T BESEECH THEE : Lord God of heaven : the
J- great and terrible God : that keepeth covenant
and mercy for them that love him : and observe his
commandments :

Let thine ear now be attentive : and thine eyes
open : that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy
servant : which I pray before thee now : day and
night: for thy servants : and confess the sins which
we have sinned against thee : both I and my
father's house have sinned.

We have dealt very corruptly against thee : and
have not kept the commandments : nor the statutes :
nor the judgments : which thou hast commanded.

Lord : I beseech thee : let now thine ear be
attentive : to the prayer of thy servant : and to the
prayer of thy servants : who desire to fear thy
name.

Neh. I.

30 v.

FROM THE BOOK OF DANIEL.
S~\ LORD : the great and dreadful God : keeping
" the covenant and mercy to them that love him :
and to them that keep his commandments :

We have sinned : and have committed iniquity :
and have done wickedly : and have rebelled : even
by departing from thy precepts : and from thy
judgments.

16 PENITENCE.

Lord : to us belongeth confusion of face : be
cause we have sinned against th.ee.

To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgive
nesses : though we have rebelled against him :

Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord
our God : to walk in his laws : which he set before us.

O MY GOD : incline thine ear, and hear : open
thine eyes, and behold our desolations : for we
do not present our supplications before thee : for
our righteousnesses : but for thy great mercies.

O Lord, hear : O Lord, forgive : O Lord, hearken
and do : defer not : for thine own sake : O my God :
for we thy people : are called by thy name.

Dan. ix.

FROM THE PRAYER OF HARASSES.
31 vi.

f\ LORD ALMIGHTY : that art in heaven : thou God
^ of our fathers : who hast made heaven and
earth : with all the ornament thereof. Who hast
bound the sea : by the word of thy commandment :
Whom all things fear : yea, tremble before thy
power :

THOU, O LORD : according to thy great goodness :
hast promised repentance and forgiveness : to
them that have sinned against Thee : and of thine
infinite mercies : hast appointed repentance unto
sinners : that they may be saved. Thou hast
appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner :
for I have sinned above the number of the sands of
the sea.

MY TRANSGRESSIONS ARE MULTIPLIED : and I
am not worthy to behold and see the height of
heaven : for the multitude of mine iniquities. I am
bowed down with many iron bands : that I cannot
lift up mine head : by reason of my sins : neither

PENITENCE. 17

have I any respite : I have provoked thy wrath :
and done that which is evil before thee :

Now THEREFORE I bow the knee of mine heart :
beseeching thee for grace : I have sinned, Lord :
I have sinned : and I acknowledge mine iniquities :
But I humbly beseech Thee : forgive me. O Lord :
forgive me : and destroy me not with mine
iniquities. For Thou, O Lord, art the God of them
that repent : and in me Thou wilt shew all Thy
goodness : For Thou wilt save me, that am un
worthy : according to Thy great mercy : And I
will praise Thoe for ever, all the days of my life :
for all the host of heaven doth sing Thy praise :
and Thine is the glory for ever and ever.

A LTHOUGH WE HAVE SINNED : yet have we an
* Advocate with the Father : Jesus Christ the
righteous : and He is the propitiation for our sins.
For He was wounded for our offences : and smitten
for our wickedness.

LET US THEREFORE RETURN UNTO HlM : who

is the merciful receiver of all true penitent sinners :
assuring ourselves that He is ready to receive us :
and most willing to pardon us : if we come unto
Him. with faithful repentance : if we submit our
selves unto Him : and from henceforth walk in
His ways : if we will take His easy yoke and light
burden upon us : to follow Him in lowliness :
patience : and charity : and be ordered by the

fvernance of His Holy Spirit : seeking always
is glory : and serving Him duly in our vocation
with thanksgiving.

THIS IF WE DO : Christ will deliver us from the
curse of the law : and from the extreme malediction

which shall light upon them : that shall be set on
the left hand : and He will set us on His right
hand : and give us the gracious benediction of His
Father : commanding us to take possession of His
glorious kingdom : unto which He vouchsafe to
bring us all : for His infinite mercy : Amen.

LORD, WE BELIEVE : that Thou desirest not the
death of a sinner: but rather that he should
turn from his wickedness and live.

WE BELIEVE : that Thou hast given power and
commandment to Thy ministers : to declare
and pronounce to Thy people, being penitent : the
absolution and remission of their sins.
Wte

WE BELIEVE : that by this ministry : Thou dost
pardon and absolve : all them that truly
repent : and unfeignedly believe Thy holy Gospel.

WHEREFORE WE BESEECH THEE : to grant US
true repentance and Thy Holy Spirit : that
those things may please Thee : which we do at this
present: and that the rest of our life hereafter:
may be pure and holy : So that at the last we may
come to Thine eternal joy : We ask this through
Jesus Christ our Lord : Amen.

LOOK down, O Lord our God,
From Thy lofty dwelling place,
And from the throne of Thy Glory.

FKOM THE CEEED OF SAINT
39 ATHANASIUS.

WHOSOEVER of us will be saved : before all
things it is necessary that we hold the
Catholic Faith in which we were baptized.

Which Faith except we do keep whole and
undefiled : without doubt we shall perish ever
lastingly.

And the Catholic Faith is this : That we worship
one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity ;

Neither confounding the Persons : nor dividing
the substance.

For there is one Person of the Father, another of
the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost.

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and
of the Holy Ghost, is all one : the Glory equal, the
Majesty co-eternal.

For like as we are compelled by the Christian
verity : to acknowledge every Person by himself
to be God and Lord ;

So arc we forbidden by the Catholic Religion :
to say there be three Gods, or three Lords.

The Father is made of none : neither created,
nor begotten.

The Son is of the Father alone : not made, nor
created, but begotten.

The Holy Ghost is of the Father, and of the Son :
neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but
proceeding.

And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other :
none is greater, or less than another :

But the whole three Persons are co-eternal
together: and co-equal.

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting sal
vation : that we also believe rightly tho Incarnation
of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the right Faith is that we believe and

24 ACTS AND OTHER DEVOTIONS.

confess : that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of
God, is God and Man.

Who although he be God and Man : yet he is not
two, but one Christ.

One, not by conversion of the Godhead into
flesh : but by taking of the Manhood into God ;

Who suffered for our salvation : descended into
hell, rose again from the dead.

lie ascended into heaven, he sits on the right
hand of the Father. God Almighty : i'rom whence
he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

At whose coming all men shall rise again with
their bodies : and shall give account for their own
works.

And they that have done good shall go into life
everlasting : and they that have done evil into
everlasting fire.

This is the Catholic Faith : which except we
believe faithfully, we cannot be saved.

PROFESSION.

40 -Bp Andrewes.

believe that Thou hast created us,
Despise not the ^vork of Thine own hands.
That Thou madest us after Thine image and
likeness,

Suffer not Thy likeness to be blotted out.
That Thou hast redeemed us in Thy blood,

Suffer not the cost of that redemption to

perish.
That Thou hast called us Christian after Thy name,

Disdain not Thine own title.
That Thou hast hallowed us in regeneration,

Destroy not Thy holy work.

That Thou hast grafted us into the good olive tree,
and made us members of a mystical body,

As the members of Thy mystical body, cut us
not off.

My soul hath longed for Thy salvation,
I? And I have good hope because of Thy word.

41 ACT OF FAITH.

I BELIEVE : Lord Jesus Christ, that in Thee I
have been born again : to be a Child of God :
and that Thou hast given me Thy life.

I believe that though I have fallen many a time
since : yet Thou hast sought me and recovered me :
and made me repent : and hast smiled upon me.

I believe that Thou art able and willing: to give
me Thyself more abundantly.

I believe that I can do all things, through Thee :
if Thou wilt strengthen me.

I believe that none ever looked to Thee and were
confounded : or called on Thy Name, and were
forsaken.

I believe that Thou hast called me by name : and
hast led me out : and that when Thou puttest me
forth anywhere : Thou wilt not forsake me.

I believe that Thou art a merciful and faithful
High Priest : to approach God on my behalf, to
make reconciliation for my sins.

J believe that as far as the east is from the west :
so far hast Thou removed my transgressions from
me: that like as a father pitieth his children : so
Thou pitiest me.

I believe that in all my affliction : Thou art
afflicted.

I believe that Thou wilt not suffer me to be
tempted : above that I am able to bear.

I believe that Thou wilt strengthen me for my

26 ACTS AND OTHER DEVOTIONS.

special work: as Thou didst Thy servants in old
times, Moses, Gideon, Samson, Elijah and Jeremiah.

I believe that with Thee all things are possible :
even to make me perfect.

I believe that the Holy Ghost is within me :
pleading with me, ready to convince me of sin : I
believe that Thou art now interceding for me.

I believe that my whole life and every event in it :
is ordered by Thy most loving providence : to draw
me to Thee : to make me flee to Thee : and abide
in Thee.

I believe that Thou art most unwilling : that I
should perish : but art full of compassion and long-
suffering towards me : that I may come to repent
ance, and be forgiven.

I believe that there is joy in heaven over me : as
I repent.

Lord, I know Thou lovest me.

Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief.

Lord, increase my faith.

I will gird myself and serve Thee.

Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do ?

JESUS is CONDEMNED TO DEATH.

And Pilate, wishing to content the multitude,,
released unto them Barabbas, and delivered Jesus,
when he had scourged him, to be crucified. 8.
Mark xv. 15.

THE WAY OF THE CROSS. 55

Then released he unto them Barabbas : but
Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.
S. Matt, xxvii. 26.

And Pilate gave sentence that what they asked
for should be done. And he released him that for
insurrection and murder had been cast into prison,
whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up
to their will S. Lukk xxiii. 24-25.

Then therefore he delirered him. unto them to be
crucified. S. John xix. 16.

Silence.
Let us pray.

It was for us : that Thou didst suffer : Blessed
JESUS : it was for our sins : that Thou wast con
demned to die : grant that we may detest them :
from the bottom of our hearts : and by this
repentance : obtain Thy mercy and pardon.

ii.
THE CROSS is LAID UPON JESUS.

They took Jesus therefore ; and he went out
bearing the cross for himself. S. John xix. 17.

Silence.
Let us pray.

/"i JESUS : grant us, by the virtue of Thy Cross :
^ to bear with patience : the difficulties of out
lives : and to be ready to take up our cross daily :
and follow Thee.

Hi.
THE CROSS is LAID UPON SIMON OF GYRENE.

And as they came out, they found a man of
Cyrene, Simon by name ; him they compelled to go
with them, that he might bear his cross. S. Matt.
xxvii. 32.

56 THE WAY OF THE CROSS.

And they compelled one passing by, Simon of
Gyrene, coming from the country, the father of
Alexander and Rufus, to go with them, that he
might bear his cross. S. Alark xv. 21.

And when they led him away, they laid hold
upon one Simon of Gyrene, coming from the
country, and laid on him the cross, to bear it after
Jesus. S. Luke xxiii. 26.

Silence.

Let us pray.

JESUS : may it be our privilege : also to bear
Thy Gross : may we glory in nothing else :
l>y it may we be crucified unto the world : and the
world unto us : may we never shrink from trials:
but rather rejoice : if we should be counted
worthy : to suffer for Thy Name's sake.

JESTJS SPEAKS TO THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM.

And there followed him a great multitude of the
people, and of women who bewailed and lamented
him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters
of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for your
selves, and for your children. For behold, the
days are coming, in which they shall say, blessed
are the barren, and the wombs that never bare,
and the breasts that never gave suck. Then shall
they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us ;
and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these
things in the green tree, what shall be done in the
dry ? S. Luke xxiii. 28-31.

Silence.

THE WAY OF THE CROSS. 57

Let us pray.

JESUS : we weep for the offences : we have
committed against Thee : and for the suffer
ings : we have caused Thee : Teach us so to mourn :
that we may be comforted : and may escape those
dreadful judgments: which are prepared for all
who shall reject : or neglect Thee in this life.

JESTTS is STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS.

And when they had crucified him, they parted
his garments among them, casting lots : and they
sat and watched him there. S. Matt, xxvii. 35-36.

among them, casting lots upon them, what each
should take. S. Mark xv. 24.

And Jesus said, Father, forgive them ; for they
know not what they do. And parting his garments
among them, they cast lots. S. Luke xxiii. 34.

The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified
Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to
every soldier a part ; and also the coat : now the
coat was without seam, woven from the top
throughout. They said therefore one to another,
Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it
shall be. S. John xix. 23-24.

Silence.
Let us pray.

f\ JESUS : Who didst endure such shame : and
^ humiliation : for our most shameful deeds :
grant us grace to mourn : with deep penitence : for
all our foul and unclean thoughts : and words and
deeds : with which we have wounded Thee in the
past : that we may escape everlasting disgrace : iu
the life to come.

JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS.

Then are there crucified with him two robbers,
one on the right hand, and one on the left. S.

his right hand, and one on his left. S. Mark'x.v. 27.

And when they had come unto the place which
is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and
the malefactors, one on the right hand and the other
on the left. S. Luke xxiii. 33.

And he went out bearing the cross for himself,
unto the place called the place of a skull, which is
called in Hebrew Golgotha : where they crucified
him, and with him two others, on either side one,
and Jesus in the midst. S. John xix. 17-18.

Silence,

Let us pray.

OJEStrs : nailed to the Cross for our sins : transfix
our hearts also : and fasten them to Thy
Cross : that they may be wholly united unto Thee :
and that having been crucified with Thee upon the
earth : we may hope to reign with Thee hereafter
in heaven.

JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS.

And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and
yielded up his spirit. S. Matt, xxvii. 50.

And Jesus uttered a loud voice, and gave up the
ghost. S. Mark xv. 37.

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he
said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit :

Let us pray.

JESUS : Who didst die for us : upon the Cross

And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb,
which he had hewn out in the rock. S. Matt.
xxvii. 59-60.

And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead :
and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him
whether he had been any while dead. And when
he learned it of the centurion, he granted the
corpse to Joseph. And he bought a linen cloth,
and taking him down, wound him in the linen
cloth, and laid him in a tomb which he had hewn
out of a rock. S. Mark xv. 44-46.

And behold, a man named Joseph this

man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
And he took it down, and wrapped it in a linen
cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was hewn in
stone, where never man had yet lain. S. Luke
xxiii. 50-53.

And after these things Joseph of Arimathea . . .

came to him by night, bringing a mixture o:
myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight,
So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it ir

OGoD THE FATHER OF HEAVEN: Who didst

We praise and magnify Thee, Lord.

OF PREPARATION FOR DEATH.

S~\ GOD the Father, of Heaven,

Have mercy upon us, keep and defend us.
O God the Son, Redeemer of the world ;

Have mercy upon us, save and deliver us.
O God the Holy Ghost ;

Have mercy upon us, strengthen and comfort us.

Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences
of our forefathers ; neither take Thou vengeance
of our sins ; Spare us, good Lord, spare Thy
people whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy most
precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever.
Spare us, good Lord.

From Thy wrath and heavy indignation ; from the
guilt and burden of sin ; from the dreadful
sentence of the last judgment;

From the sting and terrors of conscience ; from
impatience, distrust, or despair ; from extremity
of sickness and pain, which may withdraw our
mind from God,

From the bitter pangs of eternal death ; from the
gates of hell ; from the powers of darkness ; and
from the illusions of Satan,

By Thy manifold and great mercies : by Thy mani-
fold and great merits : by Thine agony and
bloody sweat : by Thy bitter cross and passion :
by Thy glorioiis Ascension, and most acceptable
intercession, and by the graces of the Holy Ghost.

he is to conduct. It should usually be so selected
and arranged as to provide opportunity for sitting
and standing as well as for kneeling, unless the
Prayer Meeting be a short one.

It is of the greatest importance to insist upon,
and to provide for, due preparation for Prayer.
In this relation the value of periods of silence in
united devotions cannot be over-estimated. They
serve as a good preparation. They mark usefully
a transition from one series of devotions to another,
e.g., the passing from penitence to intercession,
or from supplication to thanksgiving. They also
serve as a valuable means of praying for a person
or object where a set prayer is not available.
See, for example, No. 141.

It is profitable to indicate before the Devotion
begins, the selected devotions which it is proposed
to use on the occasion.

It is probably best that the Leader should stand
or kneel facing the people during the Devotion,
preferably at a desk where he can have his books
at hand, and be free at the same time to dispose
his hands in a position of prayer.

It will be observed that the devotions of the
Manual have been so arranged as to allow a very
large share of the prayer being taken by the
congregation. The difficulty usually experienced

in securing such united prayer is that of ordered
and well-timed recital. To facilitate this the
devotions are divided into short sentences, with
a colon to indicate the necessary pauses. Further,
with a view to a united beginning, every devotion
suitable for united use has its initial words
printed in capitals. These words the Leader will
say alone, then the people will repeat them, and
then both Leader and people proceed together.

It is, of course, in no way necessary that the
devotions so marked should be always said
together. The Leader will decide beforehand
and indicate as he proceeds how each particular
devotion is, on the occasion, to be said.

The Psalms afford a very valuable part of
Prayer Meetings. They may often with advantage
be said seated. They may be recited by Leader
and people in alternate verses; or as versicles and
responses, the Leader saying the first half, to the
colon, the people the second half; or they maybe
said choir- wise, decani and cantoris, if the people
are seated in two approximately equal bodies. The
Leader will indicate the method which he selects.
Much help may be given by indicating beforehand
the special teaching and divisions of the psalm
about to be recited. The Bishop of Edinburgh's
The People's Psalter will be found of great
service for this purpose.

It is of the utmost importance to secure
measured and unhurried time in the recitation of
the psalms. To this end a pause should always be
made at the colon, both in the verses of the psalms
themselves and of the Gloria. One special profit
which a Prayer Meeting should offer is that of a

calm, restful, unhurried interval in the rush and
turmoil of life.

Litanies are of the greatest value in united
devotions. The litanies of this Manual will be
found collected together at the end of the volume,
but it should be noted that they find a place under
many of the preceding subjects, and should be
used in connexion with them.

Passages of Scripture carefully selected as
suitable for united use may, with advantage, form
part of the Prayer Meeting, and be recited
together (see p. 152). A zealous Leader would
find much interest and profit in gathering from
the Old and New Testament, and the Apocrypha,
a collection of effective and striking passages for
this purpose.

It is obviously impossible to include within
the covers of a volume, limited in size and reason
able in price, all the prayers and devotions which
should find a welcome there. Especially is this the
case with missionary devotions. Such missionary
devotions as are here given should be supple
mented by missionary manuals and intercessionary
leaflets, of which so many are now issued.

And prayers from other manuals can always
be introduced ; indeed they can be even unitedly
used if the Leader recites them sentence by
sentence and the people recite them after him, in
the manner so familiar in the General Confession
at Matins and Evensong.

Hymns are often a useful accompaniment of
Prayer Meetings. They may be said as well as
sung; 'where there is doubt as to the musical

strength and capacity of the meeting, it is probably
better to recite than to sing.

The above hints and suggestions are offered
for consideration, and must only be taken for what
they are worth. Every Leader will naturally evolve
his own method, guided by his own experience, by
the capacity of the Prayer Meeting which he is
called upon to lead, arid by the Holy Spirit.

But in all cases, and at the expenditure of all
effort, the Leader will endeavour to create that
atmosphere of prayer in which the spirits of the
people shall breathe freely the Divine breath, and
be moved and uplifted as they pray.

P.S. Leaders will do well to consult Prayer Meetings
for Churchmen, Rev. C. Harris, D.D., (S.P.C.K.,
ad.), which provides valuable hints and suggestions
on this subject.
