The documents also include: a list of the the first Mandinka people who first performed pilgrimage to Mecca; a list of less known pre-colonial and anti-colonial Muslim and non-Muslim African leaders; and, historical notes on the Mandinka Empire of Kaabu (1537-1867), and its capital of Kansala, fortresses, rulers, wars, and military figures. Some documents provide information on the decolonization war in Guinea-Bissau (including military leaders of the PAIGC), the arrival of the Portuguese in Guinea-Bissau and southern Senegal in the 15th century, the arrival of first Muslim leaders in the city of Bissau, and the founding of Kombo-Gunjur in The Gambia. A work song (Mandinka: Jooka), and a poem in Mandinka Ajami are also included in this collection.Item Mandinkakaŋ Suukuwo: Mandinka Ajami PoetryMandiang, AlphousseyniThe manuscript is an Ajami poem that promotes the Mandinka language. The author was inspired by the work of the renowned Mandinka scholar, Alpha Diadji. Besides praising God and urging people to follow His injunctions, the poet adopts Diadji’s poetic style to deal with current issues in his community, including the importance of writing and speaking one's own language.
