In the poem, the poet gave tribute to his teacher, named 'Abdullah bin Tāhir. The poet also talks about death and the afterlife and praises God. According to the manuscript owner, the copy from which he made his own (the one digitized here) was written in Arabic with extensive glosses in Soninke Ajami. He translated the Soninke Ajami comments in Mandinka Ajami in order to help himself and other Mandinka speakers access the insights in the poem more easily.Item Araabukaŋo aniŋ Soninkekaŋo Alkuraana Fasaro: The Quran with glosses in Arabic and SoninkeThiam, Fode MoustaphaThe manuscript is an old copy of the Quran. According to the owner, it is about two hundred years old, and was written during the time when Soninke was the language of Muslim scholars, who were spreading Islam and teaching Mandinka students in the Casamance area.Item Banāt Su‛ādThiam, Kelountang; ibn Zuhayr, Ka'bThe manuscript is a copy of an ancient Arabic poem by Ka'b ibn Zuhayr, a famous Arab poet who was initially critical of Prophet Muḥammad. His criticisms had put him in grave danger of losing his life. He finally repented and asked for forgiveness from Prophet Muḥammad who forgave him. The poem reflects his apology and acceptance of Prophet Muḥammad’s authority. The manuscript is written in Arabic with extensive comments in Mandinka Ajami. The owner made the extensive Mandinka glosses throughout the manuscript so that he and other Mandinka speakers can better understand the story and points of Ka'b bin Zuhayr.Item Al-Shanfarī al-AzdīThiam, KelountangThe manuscript is a poem dealing with the story of an outlaw man called Al-Shanfarā al-Azdī who lived in the 6th century during the pre-Islamic era. The man decided to avenge the killing of his father. He lived for awhile in the wilderness to prepare for his revenge. He later on killed many of his enemies. The manuscript is written in Arabic with extensive comments in Mandinka Ajami. The Ajami comments were made by the current owner when he was studying the poem as a student. The owner said that he made the Ajami comments on the manuscript after every session he had with his teacher. The comments helped him understand better the form and content of the poem and also enabled other Mandinka speakers to have access to the insights in the poem.
