Graphic Design MFA Theses

Permanent URI for this community

Boston University’s Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design is a two-year program that offers a sequenced, studio-based approach to advanced design thinking and problem-solving for visual communication. The curriculum challenges students to articulate a personal design perspective through critical inquiry, formal experimentation, and engagement with mediums, audience, and authorship. Emphasizing both individual exploration and collaborative endeavors, the program prepares students to navigate an ever-evolving design landscape with clarity, flexibility, and purpose.

The MFA thesis is the program's capstone: a self-directed body of research and design that synthesizes each student’s unique visual and conceptual approach. Students develop a design methodology and, through written and visual projects, contribute original ideas to the broader discourse of contemporary graphic design. The thesis year culminates in a collective public exhibition and a designed publication that reflects the rigor, ambition, and individuality of each designer’s practice.
