Dedicated to the idea of “Advancing Human Progress,” the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University seeks a future with peace that lasts, development that works and knowledge that transforms.
Honoring the vision and generosity of Boston University alumnus Frederick S. Pardee, the Pardee School was established in 2014 and brought together Boston University’s long-standing Department of International Relations as well as seven centers of regional and thematic studies.

Effect of a postpartum family planning intervention on postpartum intrauterine device counseling and choice: evidence from a cluster-randomized trial in Tanzania
(2020-05-12)BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends postpartum family planning (PPFP) for healthy birth spacing. This study is an evaluation of an intervention that sought to improve women's access to PPFP in Tanzania. ... -
The effect of improved access to family planning on postpartum women: protocol for a randomized controlled trial
(2020-08-14)BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends that a woman waits at least 24 months after a live birth before getting pregnant again; however, an estimated 25% of birth intervals in low-income countries do not meet ... -
Adding measurement error to location data to protect subject confidentiality while allowing for consistent estimation of exposure effects
(Wiley, 2020-11)In public use data sets, it is desirable not to report a respondent's location precisely to protect subject confidentiality. However, the direct use of perturbed location data to construct explanatory exposure variables ... -
Birth spacing and child health trajectories
(Wiley, 2020-06)Using longitudinal data on a cohort of over 4,000 children from four low‐ and middle‐income countries, we document the association between birth spacing and child growth trajectories. We find declines in child height at ... -
Imagining Yugoslavia – a social construct or/and an idea with the purpose
(Center for Geopolitical Studies, 2020-06-30)Given its length and other similar works in this field, this essay has rather limited ambition. It focuses on a particular argument often used in the nationalistic narrative – the argument that Yugoslavia was an artificial ... -
NATO enlargement and US foreign policy: the origins, durability, and impact of an idea
(2020-06)Since the Cold War, NATO enlargement has moved from a contentious issue in US foreign policy debates to an accepted plank in US strategy. What explains this development—why has support for enlargement become a focal point ... -
Developments in quantum probability and the Copenhagen approach
(MDPI, 2018-06-01)In the Copenhagen approach to quantum mechanics as characterized by Heisenberg, probabilities relate to the statistics of measurement outcomes on ensembles of systems and to individual measurement events via the actualization ... -
"Wave-packet reduction" and the quantum character of the actualization of potentia
(MDPI AG, 2017-10-01)Werner Heisenberg introduced the notion of quantum potentia in order to accommodate the indeterminism associated with quantum measurement. Potentia captures the capacity of the system to be found to possess a property upon ... -
Quantum contextuality and indeterminacy
(MDPI AG, 2020)The circumstances of measurement have more direct significance in quantum than in classical physics, where they can be neglected for well-performed measurements. In quantum mechanics, the dispositions of the measuring ... -
Evaluating NATO enlargement: scholarly debates, policy implications, and roads not taken
(Palgrave Macmillan (part of Springer Nature), 2020-06)NATO’s enlargement into Central and Eastern Europe after the Cold War is the subject of significant debate in academic and policy circles. With few exceptions, however, this debate focuses on single issues, such as whether ...
