L-asparagine supplementation of a stock diet in rats: it's effect on body weight and bone growth

The apparent growth-stimulating effect of L-asparagineas well as the growth inhibiting effect of L-asparaginase have been noted by several investigators. With this in mind, a study was undertaken to see if an elevated level of L-asparagine (0.5%) would produce a "supergrowth" effect when added to Purina Laboratory Chow. Two groups of animals were used and respecti ve wei ght gains were recorded on a regular basis. The animals were sacrificed at seven weeks and the weights (dry and ash) of the femur, tibia/fibula, and mandible were recorded. It was noted that there was no appreciable difference in weight gain or bone growth between the two groups. Therefore, it appears that although a certain amount of dietary L-asparagine is necessary for maximum growth, this requirement is met in the Purina Laboratory Chow. Supplementation beyond this level seems to have no effect on body wei ght or bone growth.
