Statement of the problem. The purposes of this study were (1) to review the factors and influences which led to the establishment of the position of state supervisor of music in Massachusetts: (2) to analyze the responsibilities, duties, and professional activities of the state supervisor: (3) to present documentary material related to the various activities: and (4) to summarize the purposes, activities, and accomplishments of the position. Sources of information and data. The sources of information and data were Documents of the State Department of Education, experiences and professional relationships with Department staff members, general school administrators, instructional and supervisory music personnel, classroom teachers, and national and state, civic, educational, and music associations.
