The primary concern of the present work was to establish the structure of C11H9NCl2, a reaction product from 4, 4-Dimethylhomophthalimide and phosphorus oxychloride reported by Gabriel in 1887. The starting material, 4, 4-Dimethylhomophthalimide, was obtained by methylating homophthalimide with methyl iodide. The homophthalimide was derived by oxidizing indene to homophthalic acid and heating ammonium homophthalate. [TRUNCATED]
