    The relative fluoride uptake and retention by human enamel using different fluoride preparations and application methods

    Abstract
    The fact that fluoride does prevent dental caries or at least reduce the incidence has been established. Stannous fluoride has been claimed by many investigators to be the best therapeutic agent in caries prevention. This compound is gradually been replaced by other compounds because of the instability of stannous fluoride and unsightly staining it imparts to treated teeth. Acidulated phosphate fluoride has been found to be equally if not better than stannous fluoride in its anticariogenecity. This is particularly so when the teeth are etched before application of the fluoride. The application of a sealant after the application of the fluoride enhances the retention of the fluoride acquired. The uptake and penetration of the fluoride ion were investigated when theraflur stannous fluoride gel, phosphate fluoride prophylaxis paste and 3M fluoride with sealant were applied to tooth enamel. Scanning electron microscope was used to analyse the fluoride content of the treated enamel. Fluoride uptake and penetration were six times higher in theraflur, 3M fluoride with sealant, phosphate fluoride prophylaxis paste than the stannous fluoride gel treated teeth. The best results was obtained with 3M fluoride with sealant, which utilizes a pretreatment etching solution, acidulated phosphate fluoride and a sealant to prevent the acquired fluoride from being washed away.
