The effect of dietary rutin on the liver of young rats

The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplements of the bioflavonoid rutin on certain organ weight responses as well as some major biochemical indices (DNA, RNA, protein, and bound sugars) in the growing rat. In the present study, body weight response was not significantly higher by feeding a diet supplemented with rutin. However, there was a statistical increase in liver weight, but no effect on heart and kidney. DNA, RNA, and protein concentrations were determined for all three of these tissues; in addition, protein-bound hexose and fucose was measured in liver only. Both hepatic RNA and DNA concentrations, expressed per gram of tissue, were found to be lower in those rats fed the rutin supplemented diet; the protein to DNA as well as RNA to DNA ratios were found to be statistically higher for the rats fed rutin. Assuming that cellular ploidy is not a factor, the amount of total protein per cell is apparently higher for the rutin-fed animals. Rutin was found not to have a significant effect on the amount of bound hexoses or fucose levels. From these preliminary findings, it appears that rutin affects hepatic tissue, and it can be concluded that this effect is apparently hypertrophic in nature during this period of the rat’s development. One can only speculate at this time on the nature of this interesting phenomenon.
