As socio-economic, demographic, cultural and linguistic factors may act as barriers to dental care, a dental needs assessment and outreach program for the Hispanic community at the Mission Hill Housing Project was developed. Questionnaires in English and Spanish were mailed to 100 heads-of-house-holds and an additional 50 heads-of-households were to have been interviewed. Only 5 heads-of-households returned the mailed questionnaire and 38 households were successfully visited. Of the 38 households, 32 were Hispanic. The major findings of the thirty-two heads-of-households interviewed median age 31 were: 1.94% needed dental care 2.the median number of missing teeth was six 3.74% had less than 8th grade education 4.all the heads-of-households preferred to be interviewed in Spanish. Dental literature was also developed for the Whittier Neighborhood Health Center which is located near the target population. It is hoped that the dental health of this target population will improve as a result of this project. The groundwork for better communication and understanding of the dental needs of this community has been established. It will now be up to the local health professionals, community leaders and the interviewees to take advantage of these efforts.
