Enrollments in dental assisting programs are down and programs are closing. These are indications that dental assisting as a profession may be faltering. Low salaries, lack of benefits and little opportunity for professional advancement are suspected reasons for dental assistants job/career dissatisfaction. It is hoped by emphasizing the scope of assisting as a career, this trend may be changed. A needs assessment of 400 ADAA members documented reasons for job/career dissatisfaction and determined which of a variety of dental career options are of most interest to the assistants surveyed. These career options were researched and the data presented in this paper.en_US
