Social mobility has long been an ideal cherished in the United States even if not always achieved in practice. Contemporary studies suggest social mobility is lower in the US than in a significant number of other countries. Notwithstanding the belief that
with enough effort, any American can succeed, empirical studies show that socio-economic background determines lifetime prospects. This working paper examines obstacles to social mobility in cities.
