dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to compare a rotary action powered electric toothbrush to a manual toothbrush in effectiveness on plaque control in orthodontic patients. Thirty patients were selected from orthodontic patients at the Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry at Boston University. Initial gingival and plaque scores were taken after all patients had used Peridex for two weeks. Fifteen subjects received hygiene instructions in the use of the rotary action powered electric toothbrush (Rota-dent) and the other fifteen received hygiene instruction in the use of a soft bristle manual orthodontic brush (Oral-B 35 Ortho). Data were collected at three subsequent two weeks intervals. All subjects were monitored at each interval receiving reinforcement and additional instruction as needed. The mean gingival and plaque indices for each group at the respective data collections were determined. Plaque index was an average between before and after brushing scores. Statistical analyses were performed using analysis of variance for independent groups with repeated measures (ANOVA). Both between groups and within groups, comparisons were evaluated. The following results were found: 1. The rotary action powered electric toothbrush is significantly more effective than the manual toothbrush in removing plaque in orthodontic patients. 2. The rotary action powered electric toothbrush is significantly more effective than the manual toothbrush in improving the health of the gingival tissues in orthodontic patients.en_US
