Investigation of physical properties of contemporary chairside CADCAM restorative materials

The objectives of this study are to investigate the mechanical properties, color stability and wear resistance of chairside CAD/CAM materials. Materials and Methods Mechanical properties: The materials included in this study are: Lava Ultimate Restorative, Telio CAD, Vita CAD Temp, CERASMART, Paradigm MZ100 and IPS e.maX CAD. A total often rectangular specimens of each material were prepared with dimension of 14×4×2mm. The specimens were subjected to a three-point bending test on a 10 mm span and with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Flexural strength and flexural of modulus measurements were calculated. Additional thirty rectangular specimens per material were prepared and polished as mentioned previously in flexural strength (part 1), then these specimens were subjected to 20k, 40k and 60k loading cycles (10 from each group/condition) at 1 Hz in water baths under a pneumatically driven fatigue tester using a maximum load equivalent to 30% of the mean fracture load. The cyclic loaded specimens were then subjected to the same three-point bending test. For the thermocyclic aging, the samples were placed 30 seconds in the hot bath and then 30 seconds in the cold bath for one cycle and the process repeated for 5000 cycles. The thermal cyclic specimens were subsequently subjected to the three-point bending test. Wear: Lava Ultimate Restorative, Telio CAD, Vita CAD Temp, CERASMART, Paradigm MZ100 and IPS e.max CAD opposed by human enamel. 50,000 wear cycles against human enamel were performed and volume loss was calculated. Color Differences: Color stability of Lava Ultimate Restorative, Telio CAD, Vita CAD Temp, CERASMART, Paradigm MZ100 and IPS e.max CAD in hot water and dry were tested. Twenty specimens from each material were prepared. Color differences values after 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks were calculated. Results Flexural strength: The mean flexural strength of the materials tested ranged from 380 [plus or minus]20 MPa for IPS e.max CAD, to 181 [plus or minus]13 MPa for CERASMART, to 172 [plus or minus]10 MPa for Lava Ultimate Restorative. Paradigm MZ10 had a mean flexural strength of 174 [plus or minus]10 MPa, followed by Telio CAD 169[plus or minus]5 MPa and Vita CAD Temp 108 [plus or minus]4 MPa respectively. [TRUNCATED]
