Abstract
The efficiency of eight different solvents on ten pastes commonly used for endodontic treatment was investigated. Chloroform, Xylol, Eugenol, Desoclusol, Resosolv, Endosolv E, and Endosolv R were combined with different pastes : Spad, Forfenan, Pulpispad, Estesone, Propylor, Resoplaste, Cortisomol, Formule G. Ivanoff, Endomethasone, and N2. The weight loss was measured in order to select the best solvent for each paste. The different solvents were introduced in capillary tubes containing the different pastes. The tubes were weighed before and after action of the solvent to determine the efficiency of each solvent. Half of the pastes (zinc-oxide eugenol pastes) lost more than 10% of their weight after action of the solvent for one week : Pulpispad with Xylol and Chloroform - Estesone with Resosolv - Formule G. Ivanoff with Chloroform and Resosolv - Propylor with Chloroform and Resosolv - Endomethasone with Chloroform. Surface contact was increased by immersing the five resin formaldehyde pastes in the different solvents, and the weight loss was calculated after action of the solvent. Results showed that Spad lost 14.55% of its weight when immersed in DMSO, and 20.18% when immersed in Resosolv; Forfenan lost 18.76% of its weight when immersed in DMSO, and 17.35% when immersed in Resosolv; Resoplast was completely dissolved by DMSO; Corticosomol was completely dissolved by Eugenol, Chloroform, Desoclusol, Resosolv, and DMSO; N2 was completely dissolved by Eugenol and Resosolv.
