Abstract
The heat capacities of lithium-ammonia systems have been measured by adiabatic calorimetry for those temperatures spanning the region of the liquid solution and the solid near the eutectic point. The copper calorimeter (volume, 75 cc.) employed for the measurements was equipped with an inert liner to avoid excessive decomposition. An inner glass sleeve constructed for this purpose cracked at low temperatures; this was probably due to a volume change associated with the solid-liquid equilibria, or with a thermal transition observed in the solid. When the glass liner was replaced With a polyethylene cup liner, no cracking occurred. The solution was quite stable in contact with the polyethylene, and this material appears to be a satisfactory substitute for glass in metal-ammonia uork.
