Abstract
Five subjects (3 with natural dentition, 1 with temporary fixed prosthesis, 1 with orthodontic bands) were utilized in the project. There were 33 sample areas with incipient periodontal disease which were judged adequate for analysis. A sample area consisted of the buccal surface of a tooth and the adjacent gingival sulcus. The clinical samples obtained for laboratory analysis consisted of supra-gingival plaque from the buccal surface of the tooth and the gingival sulcus removed by gingivectomy without any mechanical manipulation of the underlying sulcular epithelium.
A clinical evaluation was made of the amount of plaque on the buccal surface of the tooth by scraping the surface with a curette and scoring the amount collected from 0-3. A clinical evaluation of soft tissue inflammation was made by visual analysis for redness, edema, loss of stippling, and bleeding tendency resulting in a score from 0-3.
