Abstract
Numerous investigations have appeared in the literature dealing with
alterations in the microbial flora of dental plaque as the plaque itself
ages. Other papers also suggest the difference between a cariogenic and
a periodontal disease-producing plaque on a patient-age basis. This investigation
was undertaken to answer the question does the toxic substrate
of dental' plaque change with the age of the patient or is it dependent on
the age of the plaque itself.
Thirty patients were included in this investigation, divided into
three groups of ten each. The first group were pedodontic patients, the
second adolescents undergoing orthodontic therapy, and the last adult patients.
This permitted analysis of naturally occurring dental plaque in
patients of varying ages and the possible effect of orthodontic therapy .
Plaque samples were removed and analysed for endotoxin content and proteolytic
enzymatic activity after a gingivitis and plaque score was determined.
All patients were then given a complete dental prophylaxis and
subsequently re-evaluated after one week for comparison.
