Abstract
This study explores the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of high school band directors and students regarding patriotic music. The aim of this study is to enhance the understanding of patriotic music’s roles in music education. Through interviews with four actively teaching band directors and focus group interviews with high school students, my research investigates five key questions related to the aims of directors programming patriotic music, the experiences of both directors and students with patriotic performances, and their personal reflections on performing such music. The findings show that band directors view patriotic music as a fundamental yet challenging component of their teaching, and they believe it provides significant educational benefits for students. Many students expressed how they enjoyed playing and learning patriotic music while also wishing for the chance to learn about it independently, free from forced perspectives. The data highlighted how both band directors and high school students appreciate patriotic music. It was also revealed how there’s a lack of critique in teaching approaches regarding patriotism. This study suggests that music teachers have the opportunity to create more inclusive learning experiences by encouraging discussions about patriotic music to allow students to form their own opinions. Overall, this study shows the importance of helping students understand patriotic music from the critical point of view within the wind band curriculum.
