Effect of dentifrice and toothbrushing on weight and color of castable ceramic in vitro

Abstract
A new all-ceramic crown system called Dicor uses an external coloring technique to match the specific tooth shade. The thickness of the external coloring porcelain is 25-40 um. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability of Dicor system Vs conventional porcelain when exposed to in vitro toothbrushing using toothpastes with different abrasiveness. Sixty Dicor samples were divided into four groups using Sensodyne; Sensodyne-F; Crest and Sensodyne + acidulated phosphate fluoride application. Fifteen conventional porcelain samples were fabricated as group 5, using Sensodyne plus acidulated phosphate fluoride. These groups were subjected to in vitro toothbrushing for the equivalent of 1O years in vivo. The samples were monitored during the experiment with a colorimeter, an analytic balance and a scanning electron microscope. Dicor shading porcelain was abraded through a regular in vitro toothbrushing resulting in a visually noticeable color change. Conventional porcelain had a similar change in weight loss, but the color change became minor after the glazing surface was removed. Acidulated phosphate fluoride gel had a reinforcing destructive effect combined with toothbrushing on both Dicor and conventional porcelain.
