Abstract
From ancient battlefields to modern military parades, the snare drum has resounded as a symbol of discipline, coordination, and power in Western military traditions. This dissertation delves into the historical evolution, cultural symbolism, and practical applications of the snare drum within military contexts. Through a comprehensive examination of archival documents, musical scores, and cultural artifacts, it explores how the snare drum has been utilized to communicate commands, boost morale, and instill a sense of unity among troops. Furthermore, this study investigates the role of the snare drum in shaping military tactics and social perceptions of warfare. By unraveling the intricate relationship between rhythm, military strategy, and cultural identity, this dissertation sheds light on the enduring legacy of the snare drum in the martial heritage of the Western world, with a particular focus on British and American military drumming.
