Abstract
Liquid ammonia solutions of alkali and alkaline earth metals have a number of singular properties that indicate that the metal dissolves and ionizes into a metallic ion and an electron. The exact state of the electron, or the degree of its solvation has not been determined, but it has been identified as the common ion responsible for all the remarkable properties of these solutions.
