Abstract
Richard II’s internal state, as revealed in the Wilton Diptych, must be contextualized by events that shaped the king's expression of kingship, namely, his adolescent involvement in the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381. The diptych, with a sense of mystique and ambiguity, allows freedom in the devotee’s interpretation of the scene and engagement with the figures painted on its panels. Evidence suggests that the pious Richard II, may have seen in the imagery of the Wilton Diptych not only the depiction of his divinely granted prerogative, but also reference to real events in which this right was experienced. Considering a deeply personal and memory-based contemplation may help us understand his actions and the nuanced imagery of the Wilton Diptych.
