Abstract
Numerous investigators have been following with both interest and concern the current controversies and experiments in expanded auxiliaries' roles, with the changing of their relationships to dentists, to patients, and to each other.
The Dental Practice Act of the State of Colorado was amended in 1971 to grant broad authorization for expanded functions through a new section which states that a dental hygienist or other dental auxiliary may perform intra-oral and other tasks assigned by a dentist and carried out under his personal direction. The law does not further define such tasks of dental auxiliaries (except for reserving prophylaxis to the hygienist) but does prohibit assignment to an auxiliary of any task which requires the professional skill of a dentist, specifically listing: diagnosis, treatment planning, prescription of therapeutic or corrective measures, and any procedure that will contribute to or result in an irreversible, alteration of oral anatomy.
Much of the previous research on dentists' attitudes towards utilizing auxiliaries has been rather haphazard in both extent and measurement aspects. In this study the major concerns to investigate the acceptability of auxiliary utilization by the dental profession within the State of Colorado following the change in the Dental Practice Law of 1971 but particularly considered from sociological, physiological and economic viewpoints.
A questionnaire was proffered to the dental profession withthin the State of Colorado and this was the means by which these determinants were obtained.
