Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of age and dietary naringenin on both neutral and polar lipids of the gingiva. Twenty-five day old male rats were divided into two groups; twenty-four were fed the basal diet, and twenty-four were fed this diet supplemented with 0.6% naringenin. At the end of three weeks, twelve animals from each dietary group were studied (pre-pubertal period); the remaining animals were continued on their diets for an additional three weeks (post-pubertal period). Gingival tissue was taken from the buccal, palatal, mesial, and distal aspects of the upper incisors. These tissues were examined to compare the effect of diet on the neutral lipids (mono-and diglycerides, free fatty acids, triglycerides, methyl esters, and cholesterol esters) and on the polar lipids (lysophosphatidyl choline, sphingomyeline, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, and phosphatidic acid). At the end of three weeks, naringenin feeding showed an increase in the neutral lipids. This phenomena was also seen at the end of six weeks when all of the neutral lipids were elevated, with a significant increase in both the cholesterol esters and triglycerides. This effect of naringenin was not seen in the polar lipids at the end of three, or six weeks, of dietary treatment. Age appeared to have a significant effect on the polar lipids, with the exception of phosphatidic acid. All the polar lipids were significantly lower among the sexually mature rats, irrespective of diet.
