Abstract
The letters in this collection were mostly written by the owner’s brothers and nephews who were living in Europe to keep him updated on their lives and preoccupations. Most of the letters were written during a time when telephones were not readily available as they are today in rural Mandinka communities. Letter writing in Mandinka Ajami was the primary means of written communication between family members who lived in different places.
