Abstract
The hey-day of the country squire may be gone but at least in literature he lives on. Tracing his development
through history we see the part he played in the growth of his country. From the time of the Norman Conquest the squires have played an important part. They were very influential and in the per1od from 1689 to 1832 they were the real rulers of
England.
