Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether a topical application of an antibiotic, vancomycin, would eliminate or suppress the organism Streptococcus mutans which has been implicated in the cariogenic process. [6] This experiment was an outgrowth of an earlier study performed by Englander and Keyes in 1970 at the National Institute of Dental Research. Twenty-eight golden hamsters, fed a high sucrose diet, were inoculated intraorally with a virulent streptococci of human origin. After five days, a marked recovery of this strain was obtained from each animal. Immediately after cultures were taken, topical applications for seven consecutive days of an aqueous solution of vancomycin (10%) were made to the maxillary and mandibular teeth of twelve animals. Weekly microscopic examinations over a 30-day period revealed no plaque deposits, cavitation, or evidence of periodontal pathology in the test animals, whereas copious deposits of plaque, extensive cavitation and severe destruction of the periodontal tissues occurred in every placebo-treated animal.
