Abstract
The Institute For The Correction Of Facial Deformities, (ICFD) established in 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts, offers multidisciplinary services in the rehabilitation of patients with maxillofacial disharmonies. The ICFD's team consists of Drs. Gasper Anastasi and Donald Booth, the co-founders and directors and representatives of the Orthodontic, Pedodontic, Prosthodontic, Oral Hygiene, Speech and Rearing, Social Work, and Psychology disciplines. Unfortunately, the team does not consist of representatives from the Periodontic, Endodontic, and Restorative dentistry disciplines. This lack of representation has resulted in the inability to provide comprehensive dental care to the ICFD patients. The purpose of this project is to provide the ICFD with information pertaining to the existence and function of comprehensive dental components in Cleft Palate and Maxillo-Facial Institutes across the nation, and with data relating to the dental needs of the ICF D patients. A DMF-T index was performed to document the oral health status of 24 ICFD patients. The results indicate that the ICFD patients are in need of dental treatment. A survey letter was sent to 44 Cleft Palate and Maxillo-Facial Institutes' Directors with the intent of identifying Institutes with comprehensive dental programs. A follow-up questionnaire was sent to those Institutes offering comprehensive dental treatment. Personal interviews were conducted with representatives of two additional Institutes. The results from the survey, questionnaire, and personal interviews suggest that the most effective approach to providing comprehensive dental treatment is to develop a dental clinic within the ICFD. Referring the ICF patients to the Pedodontic Department of the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry (BUSGD) is a more realistic approach and a referral program is now being planned to provide comprehensive dental treatment to the ICFD patients.
