Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the histologic changes that occur in selected facial sutures in the mature cat after surgical midpalatal sectioning followed by rapid maxillary expansion.
For this experiment three female cats, each over two years of age and with intact mature dentitions, were obtained for the procedures. One cat was randomly selected as the control animal and received no expansion appliance following midpalatal osteotomy. The two other cats underwent rapid maxillary expansion procedures immediately following palatal splitting. The first of these experimental animals was sacrificed four weeks after expansion while the second experimental and control cats were killed after an eight week postoperative interval.
The right frontomaxillary, right zygomaticomaxillary and right zygomaticotemporal sutures were grossly removed from each cat and examined histologically.
The following conclusions were reached:
1) Surgical expansion (midpalatal osteotomy followed by rapid palatal expansion) is well tolerated by the adult cat and may be completed in one operative procedure.
2) The zygomaticomaxiilary, frontomaxillary and zygomaticotemporal sutures in the mature cat are patent as evidenced by the lack of partial or complete synostosis across any of the articulations.
3) No significant variation in zygomaticomaxillary, frontomaxillary or zygomaticot emporal sutural morphology could be found between the control and both experimental animals. There was no evidence of sutural remodeling as characterized by increased osteoblastic or osteoclastic activity at four and eight week post operative intervals. All articulations were observed to be in a resting or "inactive" state.
4) Surgical midpalatal osteotomy followed by rapid midpalatal expansion appears to be a viable method for correcting crossbite malocclusions in mature individuals where sutural development restricts normal expansion treatment. The need for additional surgical procedures in conjunction with a midpalatal osteotomy may be questionable.
