Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, 1991 (Pediatric Dentistry)Includes bibliography (leaves 116-122)The prevalence of T.M.D. signs was investigated in a group of 270 children and adolescents aged 3-17 years. They were divided into three age groups: 3-6 year old, 7-12 year old and 13-17 year old. All subjects had no orthodontic treatment. The conclusion was based on the results of a clinical examination that was preceded by a reviewed questionnaire. The T.M.D. signs that were studied: T.M.J. pain on palpation, muscular tenderness, T.M.J. sounds, limitation of mandibular movements, mandibular deviation and deflection. A T.M.D. clinical assessment scale of 0-4 degrees was developed to evaluate T.M.D. degree and severity. The prevalence rate, and the severity degree of T.M.D. increased significantly with age. The T.M.D. distribution among the total population of the study, according to the assessment scale, was as follows: 12.6% single T.M.D. sign (criterion-1), 2.9% signs of mild T.M.D. (criterion-2) and 1.1 % signs of moderate T.M.D. (criterion-3). Signs of severe T.M.D. (criterion 4) were not found. Muscular tenderness was the most common T.M.D. Race, socio-economical level had no significant relation with T.M.D.en-USThis work is protected by copyright.
