(Periodontics)Bibliography included. This investigation was undertaken to determine if a correlation exists between the occurrence of mast cells and inflammation and further if there is a relationship between mast cells and diabetes per se. Previous investigations have shown variations of mast cell density in inflamed versus noninflamed gingiva. This study involves analysis of mast cell density in periodontal tissues of control and experimental diabetic mice. Five control mice (C57BL/KsJ) and 5 diabetic mice (C57BL/KaJ dbdb) were sacrificed for this study. The heads were fixed in either absolute alcohol, 10% formalin, or Lavdowsky's solution and sections were stained with either toluidine blue or aldehyde fuchsin.
