By far most of this time period was marked by the very slow development of the experimental sciences. But as discussion concluded in the final chapter of the volume, we saw a significant number of investigators of many different countries effectively engaged in producing a torrent of important facts on muscle histology, biochemistry, and mechanics. In less than a decade so prodigious did the amount of this work become that the present volume is able to cover meaningfully only the thirty year period from 1870 to 1900.
