Lamb, AmyJacobs, KarenSmith, Emily2025-05-142025-05-142025https://hdl.handle.net/2144/504142025This doctoral project encompasses the creation of The Student Participation And Classroom Environment (SPACE) Checklist, a tool designed to assess and support the modification of school spaces to enhance participation for students with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). Students with PIMD experience limited opportunities for engagement in meaningful activities throughout the school day due to the complexity of their disability and increased reliance on adult support. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation Framework, The SPACE Checklist facilitates environmental modifications and the creation of universally designed spaces which enhance occupational performance and participation. This tool was developed through a reflective process involving literature review, expert consultation, and the author’s field experience. The SPACE Checklist aims to support educators in creating more inclusive, responsive learning environments that foster active engagement and meaningful participation for students with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.en-USOccupational therapySpecial educationDisability studiesClassroom modificationEnvironmentMultiple disabilityProfound intellectual and multiple disabilitiesSignificant disabilityThe student participation and classroom environment (SPACE) checklist: a tool to enhance student participation through environmental modificationsThesis/Dissertation2025-05-130009-0000-9059-3740
