Gutta-percha: physical properties as related to the Boston University technique of root canal filling

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the physical properties of gutta percha when used to obliterate root canals using the method advocated by Dr. Herbert Schilder at Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. This technique involved the vertical condensation of warm gutta percha in vitro. To accomplish this objective the study was divided into two portions: one to evaluate the volume stability of gutta percha when used in the Schilder technique; and the second to determine the distance to which the mass of gutta percha will soften ahead of the heat application.
The results demonstrate, that with few exceptions, the completely condensed mass of gutta percha exhibits a greater volume than the volume of the preparation into which it is placed, that in all cases the apical constriction is completely sealed, and that vertical condensation of warm gutta percha more than compensates for any shrinkage which the gutta percha might undergo upon cooling without condensation.
Further studies should be undertaken to confirm these observations. Also, the temperature changes in the gutta percha vary from 20.5°c at the orifice to 4°c at the apex during the condensation procedure. This slight temperature change at the apical end does not appear to be significant.
