Abstract
With the improvement of dental materials during the past decade the techniques in restoring endodontically treated teeth have improved and undergone considerable changes. The classical manner of restoring these teeth 1s a cast post and core restoration. With the increased popularity of threaded and cemented pins and improved composite resins, however, alternative techniques have been advocated and are presently in clinical usage.
The use of pins and composite resins as cores, with or without the addition of posts into the root canal, is gaining considerable clinical acceptance. Evaluation of the attributes and reliability of these various restorations has not been investigated on a scientific basis. This study provides an objective evaluation of post and core model systems utilizing several of the more popular clinical techniques. The data indicates that these new techniques and materials are comparable in their physical properties to established techniques.
