Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the in vitro abrasion resistance, porosity, tensile strength and color stability of selected new crown and bridge polymerS. Six materials were chosen for this experiment: A-Namilon (control group); B-Myerson’s Special Crown and Bridge Material; C-Isosit Crown and Bridge Material; D-Isosit Inlay and Onlay Material; E-Dentacolor Crown and Bridge Material and F-Visio-Gem. Test samples in appropriate shapes and sizes were fabricated by following the manufacturer's recommendations.
For abrasion testing the specimens were placed in a toothbrushing machine and the abrasion resistance was deterlmined by measuring material weight loss and converting it to volume loss.
Porosity was measured by viewing polished and unpolished fractured surfaces under the S.E.M. at a magnification of 200x.
For tensile strength testing, dumbell-shaped specimens of each material were stresses to ultimate tensile strength in an Instron Machine at a cross-head speed of.1cm/min.
Color stability under conditions of accelerated aging was tested on a Hunterlab D25 colorimeter and analysis dy two independent observers. The results indicate that: 1. The new polymers are more resistant to the toothbrushing abrasion test than the conventional polymethyl methacrylate; 2. Porosity was notsignificant for any of the materials tested; 3. The new polymers demonstrate less tensile strength than the conventional resins; and 4. Under accelerated aging, all the materials tend to become darker. The Isosit Inlay and Onlay Material showed a very poor color stability.
