Abstract
The relationship of restorative dentistry to the health of the periodontium, and the profound inter-relationship of the two has been amply substantiated in the dental literature. The significance of axial crown contour, as a factor essential to the maintenance of the integrity of the dental unit, has been considered in the Literature Review. Our study suggests that the dental profession assumes that axial crown contour, in and of itself, does act in some way to effect the health of the gingival tissues. Many theories have been promulgated in an attempt to explain how this influence is brought to bear.
This study was conducted to learn if axial crown contour, specifically axial crown overcontour, does have an influence on the state of health of gingival tissues.
