Abstract
This investigation surveys and analyzes the CBS Television Network and its Public Affairs Department. Each chapter of this thesis deals with a different area of CBS public affairs broadcasting. Chapter I deals with the early history and growth of public affairs on the CBS Television Network. Chapter II is devoted to public affairs broadcasting and the network structure, the relationship between CBS News and CBS Public Affairs, and the relationship of programming to network polices.
Chapter III studies the structure of the Public Affairs Department, in terms of its relationship to personnel organization, finances, programming philosophy, and program coverage. Recent developments in public affairs broadcasting are considered in Chapters IV and V. Treads in sponsorship of public affairs programs, along with the amount of sponsor influence on program content is discussed. Such new developments as the use of video tape, international television, and program exchange and distribution in dealt with. Chapter VI examines the type of audience available for public affairs programs, response to programs, and methods used by the Department to measure response. The last chapter of this study is devoted to summary, conclusions, and a critical evaluation of the Department's role in broadcasting. [TRUNCATED]
