Basal and dental arch changes in treatment of class I and II malocclusions

Abstract
Background: Superelastic wire material, pre-adjusted appliance systems, and preformed arch wires have been more frequently used for leveling and alignment. Mismatched pre- to post-treatment arch form and dimensions are thought to result in a higher tendency and probability for relapse. Our aim was to investigate the basal and dental arch changes of the Angle Class I and II malocclusions in skeletal class I patients during treatment. Material and Methods: The sample included 62 patients with Angle class I and II malocclusions treated by Boston University residents. Inclusion criteria were skeletal class I, full dentition through the first molars, and minimal spacing and crowding (0-3mm). Patients with a tooth size discrepancy, prosthetic crowns, and mucogingival problems were excluded. Study models were scanned using Lava [superscript TM] Chairside Oral Scanner C.O.S. Digital Impression System (version 3.0, 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). Using Meshlab (Version l.3.2 (03 August 2012), ISTI - CNR research center, Italy), the anatomic reference points the FA point and WALA point were identified to represent the dental and basal arch dimension respectively. Comparison of the arch form, mandibular intercanine (IC) and intermolar widths (IM) for all groups was performed with paired and independent samples t-tests. [TRUNCATED]
