Meta and parasecondary deuterium isotope effects of the ionization equilibrium of triphenylchloromethane in liquid sulfur dioxide

Abstract
The ionization equilibrium of trityl chloride with deuterium substituted at meta and para positions on the benzene rings is studied in liquid sulfur dioxide by conductivity method. The magnitudes of the isotope effects expressed as KH/KD, the ratio of the observed dissociation constants, are 0.966 ± 0.003 and 0.982 ± 0.005 for the meta and para compounds respectively. In order to study these small isotope effects, the reproducibility of the measuring system was first studied. The final improved result of the reproducibility of the measuring system was 0.177 % in terms of the standard deviation of the mean. All the above experiments were carried out under the same experimental conditions, and resistance reading are related to dissociation constants through Shedlovsky's calculations. Data were collected at 0°C and the concentration of the solutions was around 3.3 X 10-3 molar.
