Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to assay the feasibility of the employment of Glutaraldehyde (0.2%, Hancock Solution) treated freeze-dried dermal allografts for the augmentation of the zone of gingiva in dogs. The dermis was obtained from donor animals, freeze-dried and stored in Glutaraldehyde for three (3) days before †he grafting procedure. Five (5) adult mongrel dogs received Glutaraldehyde treated freeze-dried dermis on the anterior area of the maxilla and mandible and freeze-dried dermis on the posterior areas (controls). The time periods studied were: 48 hours, 7, 14, 30, 45, 60. 90, and I20 days. After sacrifice, the blocks were prepared for histologic study and stained with H and E and Goldman-Bloom modification of Mallory Thrichrome. At the end of the experimental period, the epithelium presents no rete pegs; the connective tissue is highly collagenized; the periosteum is very fibrotic and firmly bound down to the bone; the bone underneath the allografts appeared to present a reactive osteogenesis. While there was evidence of vascular ingrowth from the periosteum to the graft, there was no indication of anastomosis between the host vessels and those of the grafted connective tissue. This investigation indicates that Glutaraldehyde treated freeze-dried dermis is biologically acceptable to host tissues and that the processed tissue can serve as a substrate/ bases for the ingrowth of host reparative tissue, lending to increase of attached gingiva.
