Abstract
The increase in the number of adults undergoing of orthodontic treatment in recent years has resulted in an increased demand for more esthetic orthodontic appliances. The purpose of this study is to determine the properties of esthetic powder coated wires when compared to conventional stainless-steel wire, the bending capacity, the susceptibility to abrasion and the friction value. Three different types of powder coatings were used: a urethane coating, an epoxy coating, and an FDA approved hybrid of polyester and urethane; the control was a conventional stainless steel uncoated wire. Three wire sizes were coated: 0,014”, 0.016x0.016” and 0.016x0.022”.
The wires were sectioned and the coating thicknesses were measured using a dissecting microscope. Three experiments were performed to evaluate properties of the coated wires: an abrasion test, bending test and a friction test. The abrasion test examined the durability of the coating in the presence of abrasive substances. The bending test examined the stability of the coating when the wire is bent. The friction test examined the friction values of the coated wires when compared with uncoated stainless-steel wires.
