Abstract
Obesity is an epidemic affecting over 39% of adults and 18% of children worldwide [1] that causes both a substantial burden on an individual’s health and a financial burden on the health systems. There are many weight loss tactics including lifestyle, surgical, and pharmacological interventions that have been effective in reducing a patient’s weight and increasing their overall survival. Many of these interventions can cause a financial strain on the patients who may already be coming from a lower income household. Metformin has been a well-established, affordable treatment in diabetes that has recently been found to improve other disease states such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease. This proposed study will be a randomized placebo-controlled study measuring the effect of metformin on BMI as well as other body measurements and laboratory values to investigate if metformin can be used to aid in weight loss alongside standard of care treatment for obesity.
