Abstract
Description
Paula Hirsch Foster's archive of unpublished ethnographic research and doctoral dissertation drafts was generously donated to the BU African Studies Library in 2002 by her husband, Philip Foster (Professor of History emeritus, University of Rochester). Paula Hirsch Foster lived and conducted research among Acholi of northern Uganda between 1954 and 1958 while a doctoral student at Northwestern University. Paula taught at University of Chicago and passed away in 1997 having never completed her Ph.D. dissertation.
Dates for when this work was created are uncertain. However, her actual fieldwork in Uganda was between: 1954 and 1958. Based on investigation of the BU African Studies Library's staff, this appears to be the final and fullest iteration of her unpublished dissertation drafts, and begins with Chapter 2. The BU African Studies Library does have other drafts, which include some typed, but mostly handwritten pages, on various types of paper (including onion skin).
