Abstract
The purpose of this study was to present and test a new three dimensional measuring system for comparative measurements of maxillomandibular relations at the condyle region, and to analyze ttie dimensional changes of two addition silicone interocclusal records (BluMousse-Parkell, and 3M Fast Set) when different forces are applied to stabilize the casts during the mounting procedures. The three dimensional measuring system was associated with the Instron universal testing machine (Instron Corp., Canton, MA.), and Load X Deformation curves of addition silicone interocclusal record materials were obtained in the three dimensions of space. As these curves can represent the physical properties of materials, the potential use of the presented measuring system in the research of dental materials is discussed. Tests of repeated measurements were used to determine the measurement error of the system, which showed to be +/- 0.005 mm. The established measurement error was compared to differences between studied interocclusal record materials and techniques. As the measurement error of this system presented to be smaller than the related differences, we concluded that this system is adequate to the study of interocclusal record materials and techniques. Another experiment was done to analyze maxillomandibular relation changes when different forces are applied to stabilize casts articulated with two addition silicone interocclusal record materials. Tests under different loads demonstrated that there is no significant difference between maxillomandibular positional changes when forces up to 1 Kgf are applied to stabilize the casts articulated with Blu-Mousse (Parkell) and 3M Fast Set Bite Registration Material.
