Abstract
Monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP-1) is a cytokine selectively chemotactic for monocytes/macrophages and is an important determinant of macrophages in neoplasms. [73,74] One source of the MCP-1 is the tumor cell. For example, tumor cells including gliomas [79], sarcomas [88], and myelomonocytic cells [81] were found to release tumor-derived chemotactic factor (TDCF) for monocyte/macrophage recruitment. The tumor-derived chemotactic factor was molecularly identified as MCP-1 or monocyte chemotactic and activating factor (MCAF). [81,85]
The murine counterpart of the human MCP-1 is JE, which was identified in platelet-derived growth factor stimulated fibroblasts. [superscripts 82,83] MCP-1/JE is produced locally by various stimulated cell types such as monocyte/macrophages, fibroblasts, endothelial cells and malignant cells. [88]
