This guide orients residents and fellows to the VA Bedford Geriatric Medicine rotation, covering clinical expectations, logistics, the 5Ms curriculum, two thought exercises, comprehensive geriatric assessment prompts, Goals of Care guidance, and teaching pearls for fellows.
Description
Comprehensive orientation and reference guide for residents and fellows rotating on the VA Bedford Geriatric Medicine service. Covers welcome and orientation to the GEM unit and Community Living Center (CLC) neighborhoods; the Basic Assumption™ (psychological safety framework); logistics (hours, absences, handoffs, documentation workflows, off-hours coverage); clinical expectations for PGY2-3 residents and geriatrics fellows; a quick-start guide; curriculum overview (8 core geriatric syndromes, Whole Health-based comprehensive geriatric assessment, mindful awareness, and IPEC); two thought exercises (Multicomplexity exercise and a Matters Most/CGA exercise using patient "Mr. S."); comprehensive geriatric assessment prompts; Goals of Care appendix; and a Teaching and Learning appendix covering active-learning journal club and clinical teaching pearls (including the Basic Assumption, Five Microskills, and feedback methods).
