The impact of externship programs on the clinical performance of senior dental students

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine if senior dental student participation in the ten-week externship program at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine has an impact on their clinical performance once they return to the dental school. The study sample included pre-doctoral senior dental students of the graduating classes of 2007(N=118) and 2008(N=110) at Boston University. To evaluate clinical performance we used two main indicators, clinical productivity and clinical efficiency. To measure clinical productivity we calculated the number of procedures completed per month, the revenue generated per month, the complexity of the dental procedures completed per month, and the scope of services provided by the students. To measure clinical efficiency we calculated the number of procedures completed per patient visit, and the days needed to complete a procedure, by procedure type. The students were measured on clinical productivity and efficiency before and after externship, and comparisons were conducted using t-tests, percent changes were calculated. Random Mixed Effects Models were performed to measure the impact of externship on the clinical performance of the students controlling for rotation number they were assigned to, the complexity of the dental procedures, their gender, and their class (DMD 07 or DMD 08).
